Y1 Sampling / Large Data Set
What
Sampling is a tricky topic because it feels like it should be easy. Students sometimes make the mistake of not putting enough focus on this topic. It is not enough to know the definition of this different sampling methods. You need to also understand when a particular method would be most appropriate in a given context and be able to justify it.
The Large Data Set will be referenced in exam questions and students should have a good understanding of the contents of the data.
In you first year of A-Level, you need to:
Understand the meaning of and difference between a population and a sample.
To understand how we use a sample to make inferences about a population and how the choice of a sampling method can affect the reliability of conclusions
Given a context, be able to select an appropriate sampling method
To be familiar with simple random, stratified, systematic, quota and opportunity (or convenience) sampling.Â
